Periodically
checking your child’s head for lice will help ensure early detection and
treatment. If you think your child has
head lice, please contact your child’s health care provider.
The most important thing is - DO NOT PANIC!!
Prompt treatment and focusing on resolving the issue should be the main priority.
Unfortunately, anyone can become infected with head lice and like the common cold or the flu, never be able to determine the source. It is even possible for someone to have head lice for some time before it is discovered.
Although head lice are a nuisance, they are not dangerous. They do not fly or jump, and they do not live on your pets. For best results, treat everyone in the household at the same time.
Carefully follow all guidelines and recommendations as directed when treating head lice. Generally, a follow-up treatment will be recommended.
CDC - Head Lice Information for Schools:
Students diagnosed with live head lice do not need to be sent home early from school; they can go home at the end of the day, be treated, and return to class after appropriate treatment has begun. Nits may persist after treatment, but successful treatment should kill crawling lice.
Head lice can be a nuisance but they have not been shown to spread disease. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice.
